Estelle Getty passed away at the age of 84 this morning, after a six year battle with Dementia.
If there's something I talk about as much as beer and rock, paper, scissors it's probably the Golden Girls.
I grew up watching them. My dad was all in favor of us growing up "Bundy," but my Mom disagreed.
Funny, she let us watch the smut on Santa Barbara but No Married with Children.
Even funnier, is in my adult life getting reacquainted with the Miami foursome. It really wasn't pg-13 television.
Within the last two years I had 4 of the 7 seasons on DVD.
All the gals had their golden ways...but Sophia Petrillo was my favorite.
Her heart was true. She was a philanthropist as much as an actress.
a 5 foot Estelle struggled to find roles in Hollywood for 40 years before she forced her way into the Miami set Senior drama.
Here's an excerpt from LA Ap today:
"In her early 60s, she flunked her "Golden Girls" test twice because it was believed she didn't look old enough to play 80.
"I could understand that," she told an interviewer a year after the show debuted. "I walk fast, I move fast, I talk fast."
She came prepared for the third audition, however, wearing dowdy clothes and telling an NBC makeup artist, "To you this is just a job. To me it's my entire career down the toilet unless you make me look 80." The artist did, Getty got the job and won two Emmys."
In your spare time, go you tube some Golden Moments. Here's a collection someone did of strictly Sophia...
All the other Golden Girls are still with us.
