YARD SALE! YARDS Ale! Memphis TapRoom 10 till 3 this Saturday

Memphis Tap Room
is holding their 2nd annual Yards sale this Saturday.
From 10 till 3.
This comes at a perfect time as I am moving...but I just don't know how I'm going to get all my junk there then be at South Philly Tap Room by 2. Just too much going on.
I'm moving and I have a bachelorette party that night.

But you should definitely go.
Memphis has a killer brunch. Scrapple is usually available....And I bet some of the vendors have some pretty good finds.

All vendors get to sip on YARDS Saison all the day long.

Bonk's Bar book launch @ Manayunk Brewing Co. tonight

Today's Inquirer mentions the book launch at the Manayunk Brew Pub this evening from 5 till 9.

Daniel Putkowski details the story of a young man left to run the family bar (BONKS) in the Port Richmond area of Philly. I stopped into Bonks once because I heard they were revamping their beer list.
I couldn't get a seat at the bar, so I left. Perhaps I'll return.

From an Amazon.com review:

Tommy Bonk, college student and casual piano player, never wanted his old man's bar. He wanted an education, a high-paying career, and out of his lower-class Philadelphia neighborhood. And then his brother John, a sergeant in the Marine Corps, is killed in Iraq. His father goes on a two-week bender, leaving Tommy the one thing he never wanted, a chance to run the family bar. Seduced by the financial success of his early attempts, he plunges in head first, thinking that he can outsmart crooked cops, the Russian mob, a clever local girl, and his own ambition. Along the way, Tommy faces realities he previously denied. He earns a degree in the ways of the world ... where the grading scale includes life and death ... where some things are important and others simply aren't worth a damn. --Hawser Press

Potpie and Stolen Strawberries-=-=- My evening at Standard Tap

Tonight was our summer beer night at Standard.
The Gold Rush was probably on the darker side from selections they have had in previous weeks- but it was tasting good, so all was good.

Of all my meals at Standard Tap -I never ordered Caroline's Chicken Pot pie. I tend to get seafood when I'm there. But tonight was the night despite the seasonal swelter I needed comfort food. And I love anything involving puff pastry.

My friend John Doherty gets it all the time. It's tasty and it's a good value. It could probably even have fed all three of us - that is -if April Annie ate meat, and if The raging panda wasn't training for a triathlon and loving yogurt and hummus more than puff pastry.

Lance Romance joined us eventually. I kinda had my eyes on the chalked words "pineapple bread pudding" and I thought he might be up for sharing.

But Lance was thinking strawberry shortcake. That's what we went with and it was soooooooooooooooo good.
The shortcake part wasn't the lease bit stale and the homemade whip cream made me forget about my potential lactose intolerance for two bites. Just two bites you're thinking- that's right. just two bites.

I was in a state of sweet bliss when a gentleman came up to me to tell me how much he loved Sly Fox. And as one might imagine-I love hearing that kind of stuff...so I turn my attention to him, and turn my back on my strawberry shortcake. And on Lance. We talk about steam beer and the brewery. He tells me that we need to get our beer to California. I find this funny considering how much work we still have to do in our own backyard.

When I turn around in hope of having my 3rd, but not final bite. It's gone. There's a used napkin in the bowl. And a guiltless boyfriend sitting next to me.

Sure he got Jenny Hobbs a birthday present. Sure he showed up to have a beer with us, and sure he got me a ton of boxes for my big move to Bella Vista this week...but sharing is learned at a very young age...and it seems as though my fellow has unlearned it. In other news- he's brewed two beers at the new Iron Hill in Maple Shade this week. That's exciting.

Gold Rush @ Standard Tap tonight!!!

Standard Tap continues there "summer beer" Wednesdays with SLY FOX'S
Gold Rush Lager
from 6 till I leave the tap which won't be before 9:30 if history repeats itself....

What is Gold Rush?
A copper-colored, medium-bodied beer named in honor of German immigrants from Pennsylvania who carried lager yeast to California during the Gold Rush, leading to the creation of steam beer, which is brewed with lager yeast at ale temperatures and is one of only two beer styles created in America. Brewed with British pale and crystal malts and German hops.

COME BY if YOU CAN.

3rd annual Great pizza Hunt Kicks Off @mamma mia with Johnny Goodtimes

I made a brief stop at Mamma Mia pizza (15th and Spruce) yesterday on my way to Good Dog.

You can catch all the action (including cheese falling out of my mouth) right here.
The only thing that was missing was a Sly Fox Pikeland Pilsner.

Boulder Brewing up a NEVER SUMMER strong ale aged in Strananhan whiskey barrels @ the P.O.P.E. tonight!

Colorado's First Microbrewery, Boulder is celebrating 30 years this year.

I had the opportunity to try their "Flashback Anniversary" ale and really enjoyed it-=-= an Indian Brown Ale with five cascade hop additions.

(One of my favorite DFH brews is their Indian Brown Ale as well.)

So Boulder has lined up a bunch of promos throughout the year....they were just at the Abbaye last week, and now they'll be at the P.o.p.e TONIGHT!

When I asked Boulder Sales Director Marvin Simpson- What the deal was he said:

"multiple lines give aways and Dennis will be tapping a NEVER SUMMER strong ale aged in Strananhan whiskey barrels. Tonight at 7pm"

Not sure I will still be Monk meeting or not. But should be a good time for those that go.
You might even get to see a picture of his li'l boy, Brody.

Rest Peacefully Ed McMahon. Hi Yo forever

Ed Mcmahon has left us at 86.

A Monk @ MONKS! Tomorrow 5 till 7.

From Shangy Cameron-=-=
"We have a very cool thing going down this week. Brother Isaak who is the abbott from Konigshoeven brewery is coming to Monks on June 23 from 5-7 for a meet a greet. Just wanted to give you a heads up. I don't think a trappist monk has ever come to the US, i could be wrong though."

I will be there!

From Wiki:

The beers and the brewery are usually marketed under the name La Trappe. However, in some markets, such as the USA, the Koningshoeven name is used. It is the only producer of Trappist beer outside of Belgium, and produces four regular and two seasonal beers:

  • La Trappe Blond (6.5% ABV)
  • La Trappe Dubbel (7% ABV)
  • La Trappe Tripel (8% ABV)
  • La Trappe Quadrupel (10% ABV) [2]
  • La Trappe Witte Trappist (5.5% ABV)
  • La Trappe Bockbier (7% ABV) (Seasonal)

Apart from the La Trappe brand, the brewery produces Tilburg's Dutch Brown Ale mainly for export.

Happy Dad's Day

Every day is Dad's day for me. The guy is just great.
The Woods family circus headed to my sister's house in yuppieyunk for the afternoon. There was a feast readied-=-=too bad I had just had brunch @ IronHill. Eggs benedict. I think I have finally come to the conclusion that I don't care for them.

Kabobs, Guac, german potato salad, waldorf, amazing chicken, bruschetta, hummus, spicy cheddar dip, brie with dried cherries, chocolate cherry trifle, and more.

The newphews were as rowdy as ever. Kellen was all smiles as you can see. Tanner got a hair cut. It didn't go over to well...

Second St. this Saturday-= popped! music fest, biergarten, and general frolicking

My friends Nicole and Brad had to pick June 20th to marry. As much as I love them, I wish they would have chosen another date, because 2nd st northern liberties is going to be filled with festivity, good beer, and great music.

They are closing down the street from Germantown to Spring Garden.

There will be a biergarten (tented) right at Standard Tap. Yards and Stoudts will be the main beers served... but you will probably see some cans of the blue ribbon beverage up and down 2nd as well. The foodery will be pouring beer too.

Its the day of the Popped music fest. I think the fest is in its 3rd year. Learn more here.

Philebrity is a partner and will be showcasing a variety of dj's on the Piazza stage.

For those in the Garden state-= its the Battleship beer fest. I remember 3 years ago when I went by myself and it rained. I met a lot of people that day. And I remember liking the band, the Cabin Dogs. It's also the day, I worked up the nerve to tell Tom Baker how much I liked his beers. Embarrassing. It should also be known that Lance will not be attending the wedding with me, so that he may be on the battleship with Garden State craft beer lovers.

Lunch @ The London Grill

The London Grill has never carried Sly Fox. But after a nice meeting today with their new bar manager, I think we might be on the handpump soon. It's one of the only bars in the hood that doesn't do Sly. It'll be good to see that change.

While I was there I needed food. There were a lot of tempting treats on the menu but I went with the Lemongrass crusted sea scallops with carrot"noodles" in a coconut sauce ( i love coconut) and a gingerale. ($14)

Other enticements included:

*Grilled Octopus with strawberries, arugula and balsamic reduction
*Potato pizza with red bliss potatoes, fontina, parmesan, and truffle
*Steak Salad with spinach, fried oysters, crispy potatoes and blue cheese
*And a vegetable harvest melange that changes daily.

I was introduced to "Mandarin Napoleon." It's kind of like the Grand Marnier of Belgium but better. Not quite as sweet. It's ordered sol, so don't get excited and run to the state store.

I also notice they have a nice happy hour with cheap eats
$3 philly brewing btls
$3 wine
$3 snacks
like wings, mussels, duck spring rolls, and mini fish and chips.
guests can also get a "whimpy stack" -4 mini burgers $10

They have a lot of interesting spirits there.
They do some of their own infusions...and next up on their to do list is beer cocktails...

Blue Ox wheat beerfest this Saturday

Hop on the R8 this saturday and head to the Blue Ox ...
There's actually tons of stuff on saturday...Ill have more info on the 2nd st festival soon.

As for me I will be watching "I do's" at the old Washington Square...

Help support theYoung Survival Coalition tonight @ Bridgids while eating an $8 Soft Shelled Crab Sandwich

Tonight- as in most Mondays- I'll be slingin' beers at Bridgids (24th and Aspen) but tonight is extra special because I will be donating tips to The Young Survival Coalition.

My friend Janine Carroll is doing the Young Survival "tour de pink" this fall. She'll be riding 220 miles to break the cycle of Breast Cancer.
She'll start out in Hershey and ride to Clinton, NJ over a period of 3 days-=- Oct. 2 till the 5th.

I wasn't familiar with the organization before April....when I went on their website and was moved by all the young ladies stories.

I was scheduled to go out to Newtown to guest bartend with Janine @ the Temperance House for the charity tonight...but instead (and more efficiently) I will take my post at my favorite fairmount pub and raise money for the coalition there.

Maybe I'll let you play your ipod for a bit...oh and there will be beer specials.
"And who doesn't like beer specials."
Duvel Green (usually $7) will be $4. Feel free to donate your saved cents to the coalition.

Draft List

Yards PPA, Newbold IPA, Rogue Shakespeare, Ramstein Maibock Troegs Hopback Amber, Avery White Rascal, Lagunitas Undercover Shutdown Ale, Hebrew rejuvenator, Duvel Green, Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence.
There is an Eel River Organic Porter and Troegenator about to go on...
Lastly we've got a special on soft shell crab sandwiches...$8...on toasted white bread, with lettuce beefsteak tomato and Roasted Shallot aioli....comes with a mixed green Salad.

Smokin Betty's open for business

After a year of "coming soon" Smokin Betty's ribs will be dished out tomorrow. (same owner as Devil's Alley but twice as many drafts).

I went to their friends and family tonight (to drop off some stout glasses) and didn't have a chance to eat, but I DID get a chance to get a glance at their drafts, and now here's yours.... It should be noted that their actual menu is listed from lightest to fullest. I would gently argue that O'Reilly's should not be at the bottom. It's actually quite light- bodied. hmm...

O'Reilly's Stout
Ommegang Hennepin
Dogfish 60 min
Lagunitas Pils
Allagash Belgian White
Stone Arrogant Bastard
Sierra Nevada
Sprecher Black Bavarian
Ballast Point Yellowtail
Smokin Bettys Blonde (house beer aka sweaty betty from Boulder)
Saranac Pomegranate Wheat (?)
Yuengling Lager
Ace Honey Apple Cider
Lakefront Riverwest stein beer
Six Points Righteous Ale

The beer list is looking good- dominated by Origlio and Bella Vista. And I love me so bbq so I'm thinking that I will be here a lot. I just hope I don't see too many Jefferson doctors drinking pomegranate wheat.

Downstairs bar won't be open for about a week, but the main bar is upstairs and open now.
11th and Sansom.
Cheers-=-

Everybody loves Wegmans

I have heard much about Wegmans (Voted 5th best company to work for, Fortune 2009.) 70+ stores from Rochester to Virginia, west to Erie. It's like a mile long with a small yet important section selling our favorite fermentable.

On Saturday many of their Pa locations had a beer sampling from 11 till 3.
Completely complimentary and paired with Wegman's summer themed cuisine. Wegman's has "restaurants" that allows them to carry beer only. (think Vidalia in Lansdale, r.i.p.)

This wasn't just any beer tasting. This was probably one of the best events I have done in the last three years. They counted up 700 drinkers in Downingtown this past Saturday. That means i said "right up the road in Phoenixville" at least 500 times.

Wegman's had literature available for those that wanted to seek out the most of the experience.
They listed all the pairings and mentioned why they paired well.

At first I was surprised that they paired the 113 with chicken, feta, spinach sausage sandwiches...I was used to seeing the links linked up with vienna lagers, festbiers, weisse biers and pilsners. But it worked. The citric quality of the hops complimented the acidity in the bruchetta that topped each bite-sized sandwich.

My assistants at the sausage stand couldn't have been nicer. That's a picture of new bud, Terry.
Terry used to be a sheriff and gave up being a big man in blue to work for Wegmans.
Everyone that worked there was so darn happy and efficient.

A couple other pairings included:

*Allagash abbey dubbel paired with spicy tuna roll and california roll

*Victory v-12 paried with mojo pork tenderloin with black beans and wegmans salsa verde

*Stoudts american pale ale paired with a 2 year old grafton reserve cheddar on baguette

Afterwards I went shopping and spent $49 in 4.9 minutes. Find out what I cooked next time around.

Time for bed before I eat one more swedish fish.

Sly fox visits the Art Alliance.....and did you know about Gardenia??

The Art Alliance welcomed Brian O'Reilly and I on Thursday night. 26 people turned out to hear O'Reilly speak about his craft. We poured pils, weisse, Black Raspberry reserve, pale ale, saison, ichor and incubus. They offered 3 tapas for $5. They only hold these tastings twice a year

The crowd asked plenty of good questions (as the cliche goes, there's never a bad one) and there are a lot worse ways to spend a Thursday night.

One of the best things that came out of the night is I was reminded how special the dining space is outside the Art alliance. The restaurant is Gardenia (formerly Le jardin and Opus 251). Only lunch and brunch is served....

Here's a glance at some offerings:

*Shrimp, Corn, and Crispy Proscuitto Risotto with basil and saffron citrus butter sauce (10)

*Over Easy BLT - 2 eggs, bacon, lettuce, tomato and sourdough bread (10)

*Crab Cakes with Mango Avocado, frisse salad, and cilantro lime vinaigrette (15)

*Gardenia Bufger with Cheddar Cheese, carmelized onion Aioli ancd Ciabatta bun (12)

*Fresh Fruit Skewers with cream cheese mousse and raspberry sauce (5)

Prior -= I dug into a tasty meatloaf sandwich and Misconduct Tavern (they were featuring the Harpoon Helles that night) and afterwards I said a hello to pals at Jose Pistolas where they were still holding their Allagash promos. Origlio's Jim Wiggins twisted my arm (I was "taking it easy that night") and next thing I know I am sharing a bottle of Rob Todd's lovely Victoria (150 lbs of Chardonnay grapes crushed and added to the mash) with him and Brian. I ran into Sam Adams' Liz Einhorn, and friends visiting from New Mexico (2nd night in a row- lucky me).

Cheers-=-

My accidental oyster free trip to the Oyster House...

In the same fashion as I've been to Swift Half five times and never had a swift half- i went to the Oyster House on Wednesday night and was void of the bi-valved mollusk.

Hopefully by now you've seen photos of the new OH...Mealticket had a nice spread last week.
It's ornate, yet simple. Sam Mink has arranged antiquated oyster plates as though they were "dancing" on the walls. A big change from the Oysterhouse of yesteryear...that was spiraling downward until the time the doors closed. When Lance and I first started dating we met up for a happy hour of cheesiness and started off there. It wasn't cheesy, it was just downright depressing.

O'Reilly's is pouring there (along with Rowhouse Red, Victory Whirlwind Wit and Prima Pils). I had a stout....because that's the classic pairing. I assumed I would be having oysters....but the stout makes a nice pairing with shellfish in general.

Garrett Oliver notes in the Brewmaster's Table: "The dry, assertive bitterness and roast of the beer intersects with the brininess, texture and sea flavors of the oyster in a way that nothing else can."

I started off with Dirty Shrimp ($10). My bartender, Shane, recommended them. The little crustaceans come with the head on. I felt a bit of challenge. I couldn't back down. I ordered four of them, and almost needed a new serviette per shrimp! But they were delicious. I didn't suck the meat out of the head. Baby steps. But I would order them again, and suggest you do the same. The Victory Prima Pils would have also made a nice pairing.

On to the Pan roasted scallops with garlic, corn and peas ($17). Shane explained to me that they don't use garlic cloves...its a different kind of garlic that is sweeter. These were perfectly seared and swimming in a sauce that was creamy enough to fill me up.
Or so I thought.
Out comes the clams casino, compliment of the house. And we finished with the strawberry rhubarb cobbler.

I always say I'm not a big dessert person, but I love the tartness of strawberry rhubarb. It was topped with delicious vanilla ice cream. I feel like I've had a lot of subpar vanilla ice cream in my life. This was delicious. I was thinking it was Bassat's but I forgot to ask. Maybe they should do floats with the O'Reillys...

There was a nice buzz in the room. At first I thought it was a bit loud, but my dining companion said it was just right. "It's lively like an Oyster house should be," he said. Quite a welcome change. There's nothing depressing about this Oyster house. I think Sam Mink is going to be quite pleased with the flow of traffic. Then there's the flow of liquor over the marbled bar (from independence mall). I didn't try any of Katie Loeb's oyster shooters, but they're in demand. I love that they have our Stout on, but i think cocktail shakers will be shaking more than taps will be pulled...sweet, sweet gin...making the buzz of the room that much nicer.

My avenue's going to be crazier than usual:Art+soulfood tomorrow

My neighborhood is crazy. My bedroom is right off Girard and it's noisy as hell. The trolley runs 23 hours a day. Every time it passes I swear there's an earthquake. Plus my car has gotten broken into 4 times and someone stole my bike last September--=all signs point to UHAUL. I'm moving a few blocks south at the end of the month. BUT just in time for me to still reside in my home sweet ghetto, is the art+soul food event.

From 6 till 9....26th and Girard to 29th and Girard will be filled with artisans and soul food chefs from the avenue.
They've got 10 bands on the lineup-=-= rangin from indie rock to gospel.

If anyone comes (and has my number) give me a call. I've got a sweet ass deck I need to put to use before the relocation...

Another raging panda...music venue at 40th and Walnut

As many of you know I refer to my darling roommate as the "raging panda."
Now there's a new panda in my life and in the lives of all craft beer and music lovers.

There's a whole lotta shakin' goin on in University City. We still await the open door of Mary Oaks/ Blockley Pourhouse ( I had heard unfortunate news that their draft installer passed away) and the Taphouse. But right now the PANDABAR is open.

Its a live music venue upstairs from Marathon Grill/Bridge.
I've actually never seen the space...

They've got a bevy of good beer-=
O'Reilly's stout, Bells two-hearted, Victory st. boisterous, Dock St. Rye IPA, Prima Pils, Hitachino Nest White (btls) Unibroue Ephemere, Maredsous 6, Troegs Hopback Amber, Kenzinger and more....

They'll start booking shows with r5's sean agnew shortly.
stay tuned. I'll update with website info as I have it.
cheers

yummy salad. yucky soundtrack.

I was in University City yesterday, and I thought I should check out the "new" White dog cafe.
I had totally forgot that two of my chums were fired and I probably shouldn't go in there.

But they are still doing the local thing, and doing it well. Scooter is still behind the bar.
The bar is still pouring O'Reilly's stout...(stoudts pils, Yards esa, walt whit, flying fish summer, etc)
So maybe they have a new host stand, and maybe I'm not crazy about the black and brown uniforms or the college soundtrack of Pink Floyd, and Jack Johnson...but I was totally crazy for this salad.
DiBruno Brothers Fresh Burrata Cheese
Ciabatta Bread, Roasted Garlic, Grilled Red Onions
Balsamic Marinated Cluster Tomatoes, Micro Basil Salad

I had never heard of Burrata cheese before. It's kind of like Mozz and it's kind of amazing.
I loved the grilled red onions. I loved the fresh heirloom tomatoes. The stout wasn't the best pairing, but I got over it. And I left just in time for Dave Matthews to come on. perfect.

"Artsy" a n d Sly

This Thursday, Sly Fox's Brian O'Reilly will be at the Art Alliance off of Rittenhouse Sq from 7:30 till 9:30.
Tickets are $20 which you can order here or
by calling 215-545-4302.
The gallery will stay open later to boot.
Beer! Art!
NBC online mentions it here.

Come get your corn on the cob at Wegman's in Downingtown this SAT while I pour RT 113 IPA and eat sausage all day

I'm very excited for the Wegmans to open in Collegeville this October, but for now I'll look forward to this Saturday's Summer kick off beer and food pairing event in the Downingtown location from 11 till 3.

I'll be pouring our 113 IPA all day to be matched up with Chicken Feta Sausage sandwiches.
They are also pairing Stoudts American Pale Ale, Allagash Dubbel, and Victory's V-12 with other nibbles.

I love our 113. Hops galore...Cascade, centennial, German Northern Brewer and East Kent Goldings....but also A beautiful malt backbone to balance it all out. Just bitter enough.

I also grew up next door to the highway for which it is named (also the road the original brewery is on)....so when people in New Jersey ask me what the 1-1-3 is...I can proudly tell them of my hokey Harleysville everso humble beginnings.

National Picnic Month @ Supper starring The Incredible Edible Deviled Egg

I'm hungry.
I'm thinking about eating one of the 3 ribs left in my fridge that the raging panda made this weekend, but since I ate like 9 yesterday...she might just want those last three.

I'm hungry so I'm going to write about food.

July is National Picnic Month....and Mitch Prensky of Supper is at 926 South St. is celebrating with a variety of deviled eggs throughout the month.

It kicks off on the 1st-= I'll be guest bartending.
All 12 egg halves will be available for $9.
or $12 if you want to sip on a can of Sly Fox.

Then throughout the month you can get 4 halves and a can for $6. They will switch up throughout the month.

Chef Prensky will have eggs for the crustacean craver, eggs for the carnivore, eggs for the breakfast lover, eggs for those wanting a li'l south of the border bite...

Sriracha Deviled Egg with pickled daikon, carrot and coriander;

Pistou Deviled Egg with ratatouille;

Horseradish Deviled Egg with steak and Roquefort;

Deep-Fried Scotch Deviled Egg with country sausage;

Wasabi Deviled Egg with uni and crispy nori;

Saffron Deviled Egg with salt cod and roasted garlic;

Black Truffle Deviled Egg;

Chevre Deviled Egg with Spring Asparagus;

Lobster Deviled Egg with dill crème fraiche;

“Bacon and Egg” with braised bacon and cheddar;

Smoked Chile Deviled Egg with corn-red onion salsa;

Vadouvan Spiced Deviled Egg with roasted cauliflower and mint.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

In addition to the Sly Fox cans, SUPPER embraces different local craft beers all the time.

My not-so-green thumb

Here's a bit of a beer break-=-

I wish I had before and after shots of my lily.
As mentioned a couple of weeks ago lance romance and I headed to greensgrow.
He was trying to best his planter from last year...and I think he may have done it...

I- however- just bought a lily (unbloomed) due to the fact that I would be moving in a few weeks (yes, again) and didn't want to have to move a greenhouse from deck to deck.
It kept falling off my table. And it was doomed.
I gave up on it.
Then -then- the same rain that kept me from riding my bike on Friday provided the necessary moisture for two flowers to bloom. That's them on the right...they're just lovely. But you can still see all the brown from its near death experience.

Did Everyone's Sunday look like this?

The elder sibling of Raging Panda at Swift Half eating the cheese plate after about 13 beers.

We had hung out on Lemon Hill for the majority of the day- as most of you know Lance is super into cycling....There was plenty of Iron Hill Vienna lager. A bit of Sly Fox cans. It was nice to see a few other groups throwing back the aluminum as well. There was one mojito consumed because I was told "Its tradition."

I had a four-year old break my sunglasses. I had an interesting conversation with a soon-to-be married graphic designer. I saw TONS of bikes. But I didn't see mine. I DID see my sister. And she was making merry and adding to the sunshine of the day.

I went home and raging panda wanted to- you guessed it- rage at the Piazza. Quest Love was spinning till 9. The Sundae party was going on. It was a sardine sidewalk. Lots of "see and be seen" folk. And the skateboarding brother of the panda.

I headed to Standard Tap afterwards- then a quick popover to 700 club. Where in my most infinite wisdom told a Johnny Brenda's bartender I would fix him up with the Panda.
Note: She doesn't know this yet...

New PW beer post up: The stories behind local sips

My latest Philadelphia Weekly online post is a "what's in a name" kind of piece.
The stories behind the sips.

I'm mad at myself because I meant to include Earth bread + brewery and had already submitted it when I remembered. Of all the breweries and beer names out there, Tom Baker takes the cake in the art of Naming.

The beers I picked were:

Nodding Head's "Rudy's Kung Fu Grip"
Sly Fox's "Dax Maibock"
Weyerbacher's "Zotten"
YARDS "Brawler"
Dogfish Head's "Palo Santo Marron"
and Iron Hill's "Cannibal"

Bad Picture- Good Food @ the Khyber Pass

I feel the need to bring the Khyber Pass cheap ass delicious food to your attention.

When I'm in that area and the stomach is starting to grumble...I think Khyber, National Mechanics, or Society Hill Hotel. Pharmacia is nice for Brunch actually-=-== because they start at 9 am.

The Khyber is always switching the menu up...I've already written about their mini Royal Tavern burger before...This week they had two different kinds of Quiche- Lorraine and Vegetarian. I chose the homemade scrumptious veggie egg pie- I have a mild aversion to domestic ham, despite my obsession with most other pork products.

My dining companion got a steak burrito that was bigger than my head- bringin me back to College days at PSU eating at LaBamba.
We also shared fried pickles- known simply as "frickles."

Some other menu items escape me- but the menu is thoughtful and C H E A P.
There was barely an item over $6.

It might just be the best deal in the O.C.

Walk Joe Sixpack's Edible World of Philadelphia

It's time for
The First Person Arts Festival.
This year they have added a walking tour with everyone's favorite beer newsman, Joe Sixpack.

3 1/2 hours of fun facts and great tastes throughout the Northern liberties area.

Sounds like a good Father's Day treat to me.
