Sly DOG GanG-= Ladies of Mischief @the Devil's Den tomorrow night

Megan Maguire wanted to have a "ladies in the biz" night.
A bunch of us beer-loving lasses hanging out talking and sippin the good stuff

We're doing it at the Devil's Den tomorrow night-=WEndy Domurat of DFH, Megan Maguire-=recently nicknamed the "Ommegang Queen" and myself.
7 pm. All are welcome-= testosterone and estrogen-laden alike.

We'll be tapping a firkin of Chester Co. bitter from Sly Fox.
Ommegang abbey, three philosphers and duvel green will be poured.
There will be plenty of sly and dogfish head on hand.
And plenty of mischief of course.

A smackdown of two cities: NY vs Philly @ Swift Half tonight

The competition on the mound will be joined by a smackdown at the pub tonight as Swift Half will be pouring a variety of Philly and New York beers.

South Hampton's Spencer Neibhur, this guy >>>>>>>>>>>>
will be coming to our city. Perhaps a little worse for the wear after Philly trumped his team last night. Maybe him and Steve Mashington should also have a topless smackdown.

I'm not sure if Jeff "Chief" O'Neill of Ithaca brewing is making it down but his beers will be representin.

Casey Hughes of Flying Fish and Nick Johnson of Troegs will be there terrorizing Spence. 7:55 on...

Sister joint- the Good Dog will be tapping an Oak-aged firkin of Flying Fish's latest release, Exit 1-=their oyster stout at 7 pm.

The trash talking been begun.
Hope to see you there.

Also- can specials as always at Jose Pistolas $3 Sly Fox.
Here are a few other pics of the self-described "fuckin handsome" man from the Hamptons.

Art Museum area's Aspen to reopen in a few weeks

I was walking by the Aspen the other day when I noticed a peco truck outside.
The cease and desist orders were removed, curtains were up- all signs pointing to a reopening coming soon.

Lance ran into the owner who confirmed that he indeed hopes to open doors within a few weeks.
Tomorrow will be one year to the day, that Fairmount lost one of its favorite bars.

We look forward to the reopening. The owner promises that it will be more of a bar than a restaurant this time around.

Hopefully Sly Fox O'Reillys stout will find a home once again on the tower.

Coos to celebrate Grand Opening this weekend. Craft Beer + SPORTS

I am not sure if this was on sports loving-= craft beer enjoying folks' radar or not...
but there's a new bar on North Broad (broad and parrish) COO's.

They'll be celebrating their grand opening this Saturday witha a masquerade party.
They are pouring the likes of Ommegang, Victory, SLY FOX, Chimay, etc...
Their menu looks great. I want some of those curried mussels right about now.

The place is large! Tons of tvs to watch your favorite players on. And specials...lots of them

Firkin of Duck Rabbit @ the Institute tonight!

12th and green

from the CollaZO's

"We will have a firkin of Duck-Rabbit Brown Ale dry hopped with specialty hops as well as a Wee Heavy Scotch Ale on draft for the evening.

On had will be Owen from Duck-Rabbit talk about some of there other great brews. Will also be doing a chocolate demonstration on how to make your own chocolate truffles at home."

I do love me some Scotch Ale-=wow-=there's a lot going on tonight.

What I woke up to this rainy morning...

I woke up to a picture of a topless pickled ginger this morning. (lance's new nickname for Steve Mashington)

Apparently Good Dog hasn't put up their
"No shirt
No shoes
No service" sign yet.

I just know he was laying some "$%^&*#" truth down and not "lying to people" and telling people things that were just between him and them.

And probably- probably telling someone-=-whomever would listen-=- about his "awesomeness"
By looking at the non-existent crowd behind him- I am assuming it was after hours and that said victim might just be Zack the bartender.

bloktoberfest-= gigantic success despite monsoon

Saturday was spectacular on the 20th block of Christian St despite the borderline non-stop sprinkle.

I was pouring Renard D'or ( Golden Fox) our Belgian strong golden and one of the last kegs of Oktoberfest in the city...
We were first to kick our beer which could be credited to being the first table in the tent- but I'd like to think it was the elusiveness of the Renard that had them comin' around.

All 14 beers kicked by 7:00.

Kudos to Jim Meiers and Dan Conway for sticking around a bit later and helping break down.
We were on our second beer at the Sidecar when the two drenched arrived. I felt so bad-I tried to make it up with some Makers Mark. That seemed to do the trick.

I'm not sure how much money was raised for the Shiloh Baptist church- Ill write and update when I find out. Good job to Adam Ritter and the Neighborhood association.
Here's some pics

Dan Conway gesturing with his Left HandCameron wearing Dan

It was a nice surprise when my sis michelle showed up

The softer side of Casey Hughes and Exit 1 revealed this Wednesday @ Sansom St. Oyster House

I am reposting this picture i found on Casey Hughes' facebook because it's one of the only pictures I have seen in the last three years in which he's not looking like a brewer turned rapper.

Deus, Kwak and Tripel Karmeliet to be poured at the P.o.p.e with Jack Van Antwerpen Tuesday night-=-=-

from desk of Cameron Saunders-=

The POPE is hosting a Bosteels Brewery night that will feature Triple Karmeliet and Kwak on draft and DeuS will be in bottles. There's going to be dessert specials that will pair up with the beers.

Jack Van Antwerpen, President of Exports for Bosteels, will be making his way across the pond for his first visit to Philadelphia. Come and meet this wild man. He will also be able to answer any questions you might have about their beers. 7 till 11 Cheers ! CS

Deus is actually first brewed and first fermented at the brewery then taken to Champagne France where it undergoes the same process as the finest bubbly. We can sub it out for Champers when the Phils take the series.

Kwak was actually the first Belgian beer to be poured this side of the pond in 1995.

and Tripel Karmeliet which is poured in one of the most beautiful vessels out there. The glass is tall, boulbus and etched with a whimsical lacing... I bought two in Elkton, Md at State Line liquors years ago. I have no idea where they are. The beer is made with 3 different grains-wheat, oat, AND barley... probably one of my favorite examples of the style.

Joe Six Pack wrote about it last week.

I have a sampling at Smiths that night around happy hour...then hope to make it down.

Oh Chan Ho. sigh, you're married?

A few of you may know I have a slight crush on Chan Ho Park. Victorino would be number two and there's not a 3rd. You can have Utley, and Jayson Werth has a tendency to look like a werewolf. And he spells his name lame.

I have a soft spot for Korean guys because my first love was Korean, Lee Rennels.
Lee had such an interesting way about him. Adopted by an American family when he was a small tot- he was handsome, "athletic" funny, witty, charming, and had a heart the size of Seoul.
He was the only Korean guy on the Souderton High Football team.

Chan Ho was the first Korean player in the major leagues. And- as you know-the only Korean guy that can grow a beard.

I don't know much about Chan Ho. I know he used to be a Dodger and I know he doesn't pitch that much. That kind of lends itself to the "absence makes the heart grow fonder" way of affection.

I didn't know he was married to a socialite/chef.
This is a bite of a downer on this Friday morning.
I have no chance. Good thing I've got that Lance guy around.
Back to work.

Friday Lunch-=limb and life debuts at Joses-NOT life and limb. whoops.

TODAY at 12
Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head's Collaboration::Limb and life will debut at Joses Pistolas during lunch.

Its the less potent version (second runnings) of Life and Limb. very limited. draft only.

They will also be pouring
*Estate Harvest
*Southern Hemisphere
*Yakima Harvest

at the same time for the first time.

I had a moment

I was thinking about a bunch of different things to call this post.
But I'm gonna go with "I had a moment."
A friend of mine told me I just might have one.

Or maybe three of them @ the Spectrum on Monday night. I finally saw Bruce Springsteen.
Admittedly- I am not one that know all the words to all his songs. But I love him, and all his feel good music.

I haven't been to the spectrum since I saw Simon And Garnfunkal in 2004.You could feel their animosity from the other side of general admission.
This was the opposite.
Except for a couple in their early 60s in front of us. they sat down almost the whole night.
Who sits down when Born to Run is playing? Badlands?
I wish I could've said I stood the whole night- but Lance made me sit down at some point when it got dark and soft and many people sat down. He said it was an etiquette thing.

But I can tell you I smiled the whole night. And I'm still smiling now as I head to Freehold township to sell Sly Fox. I wonder if I would be more productive if I wore jeans and a leather vest????

At the end of the night-= we got a cab to Joses where we just missed the Phils win by 30 seconds. It was still exhilarating to walk into a bar full of fans after walking out of the spectrum. Back to back highs. Joe Gun was the first person I saw....then my friend Andrew and his cousin...then Gordon Grub the 3rd!

Joses is a great place to watch a game AND they do $3 Sly fox cans during all games....

Enjoy the day!

Flying Fish and Iron Hill so happy together in the Garden State

Flying Fish is gonna be a welcome wagon this Saturday at the new Iron Hill in Maple Shade.
Casey Hughes and Lance Lapierre will be putting a bunch of their reserves on tap between 1 and 5.
They'll be doing tours. And doing a bit of day drinking. You should really go...you don't want to piss them off.
Just look at Casey all annoyed in Lavender >>>
and Lance--= have you ever seen him so angry???

You can read all about it on Lance's Blog.

Here's an excerpt...
This Saturday (10 / 24) Flying Fish will be welcoming us to the neighborhood by bringing some of their more sought after creations into our restaurant for a special gathering. We’ll reciprocate by putting some of our reserve stash on tap for the afternoon. Of course brewers from both breweries will be around to give tours, chat and of course drink beers with you. The beers will be tapped at 1:00 pm and stay on until (a) 5:00, (b) they run out or (c) Casey says something stupid and falls down.

FWOToberfest this THuRSDAY 7 pm.

Fwotoberfest?
What might that be?

Hopefully you've heard of F.W.O.T. by now....Fingers, Wings and other things at 107 Ridge Rd. in Conshy. They make all their sauces in house and use fresh chicken.

From 7 till 9- They're going to pour 4 beers for $10 and give complimentary wing pairing.
Victory Golden Monkey will be paired with Bee Sting (think buffalo meets honey)
Sly Fox Dunkel with their teriyaki wings
Oktobefest Sam Adams- I believe) with Buffalo sauce
Dogfish 90 minute with Barbecue sauce

They will also have a variety of 1/2 sandwiches available for an additional $3.

I say you do double duty and hit the new
Stone Rose
a few minutes down the road afterward. 822 Fayette St. They've only been open a week or so, but the reviews have been pretty positive. I believe they have all craft beer on draft. Oddly, the name has nothing to do with the band that wanted to be adored.

Craig and Rob-= the guys behind the FWOT are really trying to get better beer drinkers to their wingdom. They've been focused on craft beer for months now- they have 8 varying ones on tap. They've been advertising in the beer mags...but they still haven't gotten the response -they had hoped for. Its changing slowly but they need your help! Come by on Thursday for a bit- drink some beer and eat some wings with me.

recappin'

Saturday was the annual Newtown Beer Fest. Sold out well in advance- but the cold front and rain put a damper on the day. I wish I had purchased gloves. The best thing that happened to me all day was probably a cup of coffee. The pork sandwich that I raved about last year... seemed different from the same restaurant.

I had a lot of people coming up to me saying how much they liked our beer...but we need to sell more in Bucks Co. Hopefully they are actually going out and asking their taverns and distributors for it.

I finally got to meet a "facebook" friend Patti D. She was nice...rather thin for a beer lovin lady.

I met this guy John who would like to make a major career change to the world o' beer.

I told him I would put his photo up and try to get him hired. He might want to do sales. I'm not sure. Let me know if you're looking.
He's really passionate. Can you tell?

I was wiped from the day and took it easy. Stayed in eat capellini and watched "In Bruge."

The next two days were a lil hectic in the Woods World.
My brother-in-law bashed his head in running after my little nephew Kellen. 16 staples horseshoe style in his head.
My mom ended up in the emergency room with a dislocated shoulder, and my sister and said frankenstein brother-in-law had to put their dog, Jake, down. Little Tanner was pretty heartbroken.

The week is off to a good start. I got a few leads for some new Sly Fox draft. My mom and Bro- in-law Brandon are a little beat up, but happy nonetheless. And I think I'm too tired tonight, but I'll try to do my Bruce Springsteen wrap up tomorrow.

Baby Hartranft-Maida IS HERE!

I got a call that Leigh and Brendan of Memphis/local 44/Ressurection are parents to a little boy.

Not sure what the name is...but my friend Matt has already has the peanut pegged for bartending by the time he's 6.

I saw Bruce Springsteen last night

They'll tap 5 beers on Saturday and another 6 on Sunday.

Chef Jesse Kimball will be dishing up tasty German treats like rollmops, kassler ripchen, sauerbraten and more all weekend to go along with all of these amazing beers.

Go Phils.

PorktoberFest Day 16: The Homemade Edition

This is it.
The culmination of 16 days of a swine-laden life.
Back in June when I moved to my swank Bella Vista abode- I offered to make lance romance dinner-=anything he wanted.
He chose porkloin, mashers, and green beans.

Could there be a more ideal way to end Porktoberfest other than me donning an apron and spending a couple hours in the kitchen? I think not.

I marinated the porkloin in rosemary, garlic, Salt, Pepper, and Dunkel Lager.
I threw some mustard powder into the smashed potatoes and tons of cheese.
Green beans--I did Julia Child style- boiling till tender than sauteeing them up with olive oil and garlic.

I was quite pleased. We shared a bottle of Malbec- which was good, but Dunkel lager or Saison would have made a great pairing as well.

I should go on a diet now...but I won't. Phils are gonna take it...and there's plenty of wings to be had.

Thanks for following Porktoberfest 2009.

Cheers,
suz

PorktoberFest Day 14: The "I Can't Believe it Took Me So Long to Get There But it Was Worth the Hype Edition"

Everytime I stop by Johnny Brenda's I think today is the day that I'm going to the much talked about sandwich shop, Paesano's.

I have a list of places I have yet to hit- it drives me crazy. I can't believe I haven't been to bibou yet. And although its been open merely a week, I feel like I should have thrown back a can of Pikeland Pilsner at MidAtlantic in University City by now.

I remember Bebe's barbecue was getting all sorts of press, and the only reason I made it there as soon as I did is because its like 75 feet from my house. I get busy...and chances are 9 out of 10 times I'm going to hit the newest bar before the newest sandwich shop, right. I sell beer not bread.

I was on my way to visit the Craft Beer Outlet in the Northeast yesterday when I was thinking about where I would have pork. I was leaning toward El Camino Real because they had just put the dunkel on. I was thinking pork in some mole sauce.

Maybe that will be today...because the time had come yesterday for me to try what's been the talk of our big town.

Unbreaded was there back in August and has a nice write up on them.

Although "the Paesano" was tempting- it's still porktoberfest- so I went with the Arista-
Suckling pig, sharp provolone, long hots and spinach. They're served on Liscio rolls ( a new jersey based company whose slogan is "It all starts with the bread" Their website even gives you the opportunity to share your bread story....do you have one? I don't. But it's nice anyway.
They even have a page on bread facts.

This post could also be known as the best sandwich edition or the suckling edition.
The suckling pig was so juicy. the roll was perfect, the long hots didn't overwhelm me, and despite not having any floss in the car, the spinach amazingly enough wasn't cradled in the teeth of my kisser. A way better way to spend $8 then to wait in line for one of two of the worst cheesesteaks in Philly.

Every once in a while I get cheesy (my friend Collin might think just every once in a while?)
I was on the floor at the Great American Beer Festival a few weeks ago, watching my peers and pals take the stage and claim their new jewelry. We all saw Pizza Port Carlsbad out of California take medal after medal. Many gold- as well as large brewpub of the year. The San Diego Union Tribune quoted the brewer, “I kind of prepared myself for the worst,” said Jeff Bagby,“I was prepared to come home with nothing.”

It got me thinking about the concept of excellence.

Of really being born to do something so naturally, or working so effin' hard at it, then it's as though you were anyway.

After that sandwich, the same feeling came back to me- that hit me at a 5,000 feet elevation.
Peter McAndrews and Nathan Baynes have created an excellent sandwich for Philadelphia.

I hope in the years to come that they will have established themselves as a place to go when visiting Philadelphia, I think their second location (just about 6 weeks out) at 9th and Christian is going to undoubtedly solidify that.

Al Martino leaves us at 82

Woke up early this morning to hear on xpn that former South Philly bricklayer turned star, Al Martino, had passed away. Famous for Spanish Eyes, Daddy's Little Girl, and many others. Well known for his role in the Godfather as Johnny Fontane...

A place to call his own-=

Mike Hamara-=-= Greg Ramirez's right hand man at Exton beverage-= opens his own beer and winemaking shop on this Friday October 15 in Downingtown-=128 East Lincoln Highway

Artisan Homebrew will be open
Tuesday thru Friday 11am to 7pm,
Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 12pm to 5pm.

For more information, contact Mike Hamara directly at the store at 610-873-HOPS(4677) or email at Mike@artisanhomebrew.com

There was nothing of the sort in that area.
Hamara shares, "Customers would come into the beer distributor and share with me stories of mail ordering for homebrewing supplies," he says, "or driving as many as thirty-plus miles just to get the ingredients or equipment needed to get a brewday going. If their brewing session had begun and they had forgotten something, they were out of luck. At that point, I knew that I should do something about it."

Bueno Suerte Mike.

Porktoberfest Day 13: Taylor Ham or Pork Roll?

If you live in North Jersey- you call it Taylor Ham...but you also think Stella Artois is drinking better beer.

In these parts its called Pork Roll. And I grew up on it. As many do- I pretend its pacman with that little sliver in it. Its one of the only things I still like ketchup on. As with many pork products brought up over the last two weeks, pork roll brings me immense joy.

This Pork roll sandwich was consumed at Zeke's Deli on 5th st.

Lance had a friend Ray in town (harpoon guy) and the brewer was craving some Taylor Ham as he calls it.

I first thought John's on Snyder...but the guy is closed on Saturday- which I find to be a bit lunatic...however he's John and he can do what he wants.
