I always wanted to have a Wishing Well right by my house-=-=

Monday, April 5th - two great things will be happening.

I will be eating meat again....AND the Wishing Well Public House is opening a mere 3 blocks from my house.

The location of 9th and Fitwater has been problematic for restaurant owners in the past. Mezze and Pat Bombinos both closed the doors after short stints.

But the folks behind Wishing Well- (Carmen Cappello and Chris Martino) are already making some great decisions. Plenty of craft on draft (Bells Oberon, Terrapin Rye), and their grilling up a famous burger known by the name of "Shame" with scrapple, egg, and cheese on top.

I'll get a sneak peak tomorrow night and report back.
Also- for interested ladies-I am arranging for this to be the next beer club on Wed, April 14 at 7:30.

What a great day.  The plants in my courtyard are springing up green again.
And I can almost taste the can o Royal Weisse I'll have later today.

April Fools Day @ the Side Car with St. Feuillen brewery

April Fools Day with St. Feuillien!
Stop by and meet with the owner-=
Foolishness starts at 3.

The brewery has been going at it since 1123.
A St. Paul beer blog, the Captains chair mentions.  the brewery's back story is as follows-=

"An Irish  monk by the name of Feuillien came to Europe to convert lost souls in the 7th century. Unfortunately, our hero stuck his neck out a little too far, and was martyred and beheaded in what is now the town of Le Roeulx. In his honor, the monks constructed a chapel on the very site of his martyrdom, which later also served as a brewery. That’s one hell of a grave marker."

Casey Hughes victorious after a potential tie at Pins and Pinups last night

I woke up this morn not knowing the results of pins and pinups at Varga Bar last night.  I texted one of the "pinup" girls to find out who the victor was.

This is the text I got in return:

"Well it was a tie so they had to do a chug off.  We had John Hobbs, so we won."

For those of you that don't know John Hobbs- he is the infamous hero of the  opossum massacre of Christmas of 08.  Also known for his ability to consume mass amount of beer in very short periods of time.

Congrats to Casey Hughes and The Flying Fish crew.  Also congrats to them for making a delicious beer in that of Exit 16.

It's 7:32 am and I am off to walk three blocks in the rain to my car to attend a seminar in the North East.
If there ever was an ugh... Ugh.

Pins n' Pinups CHAMPIONSHIP- tonight Varga Bar 9 pm

I'm kind of bummed because I will be missing the VARGA Pins and Pin up finals tonight.

Bummed because Triumph and Flying Fish are such $%^&talkers-and I won't get to see one of them eat their words.

They both know how to rally a group (cuz that's what this seemed to be more about), and both beers are really solid (Uber pils from Triumph and Exit 16 from flying Fish).

I'm most bummed that I won't get to see my best gals dress up like vintage Pin up girls.
The bout begins at 9 pm.  First half keg kicked wins.

But I will be at Bridgids in case you're in the Art Museum Area.
We started a late happy hour last week.  So Sly Fox cans are $2 and American Craft Drafts are all 4.  Glasses of Wine are $5 from 9 till 11.

Happy 5th Birthday William Jeffery Woods

March 25th is special to me.  In 2005, My first nephew, William, was born.
I remember rushing to Grandview Hospital by Doylestown to meet the lil nugget.
I walked across the hall and saw my older brother staring through a window adoringly.
When I approached, the first thing he said to me was, "meet my son."

At that point in my life- I had never been in love at first sight.
I took one look at him and I instantly loved him with everything I had.
Usually love grows through time spent with someone.  We were at about 5 seconds- he was an hour old and he was already one of my favorite people on the planet.

Today he's painting pottery, going for doughnuts, visiting a castle, making a tye dye shirt and have dinner.
I called him to wish him a happy birthday.  And he said, "Is this Aunt Suzy? Are you bringing me a present?"

I don't know if he needs one more car or train or dinosaur.
I don't know what I could possibly get him to  match the gift he's been to me.

12 Days till I eat bacon for Hours and Hours

I want meat!
Goat, Duck, Lamb, Steak, Chix, Pork, and more Pork.

I want the "arista" from Paesano's, the Duck breast from Pumpkin Market, that Iberian ham from Dibruno Brothers.  I want a burger for $5 from Misconduct on a Tuesday,I also want the burger from Royal Tavern, i want sliders from SPTR, I want carnitas from 9th st, I want everything from Percy St, I want those birch beer wings from Supper, I want Bacon!  Lots and lots of bacon.

A few weeks ago when Lance and I were having brunch at the P.O.P.E.- he purposely waved a piece of bacon under my nose.  I said "I would never do that to you."  To which he responded,
"I would never give up bacon."  Touche Lance.

It's been a challenge- but on the positive side-I've ordered things I would never had ordered otherwise.
I've been avoiding seitan for years.  I don't even think I can digest it. But I ordered it today.

I ordered the black bean soup (so good) from Royal Tavern and followed that with a Seitan Burrito.  It was also quite delicious- I couldn't tell what cheese was incorporated, but there was plenty of corn, and some jalapenos I believe.

12 days to go (at).

Hold the Pork Day ?

This whole hold the pork thing (and beef, duck, veal, chicken, etc...) has me eating a lot of mollusk.
As mentioned two days ago- I had mussels twice. Some doctors are even recommending three portions of mussels a week to make the most of its omega-3 content.  For 3 oz of mussels- you get 20-20! grams of protein and only 6.3 grams of carbohydrates.

Today was mussel free.  I had this interesting spinach and farmer's cheese falafel served with a mound of basmati rice and grilled onion and eggplant.  Three of us at lunch got it...and I think all three of us could have shared one-but it was good.  Having eaten there three times in the last three weeks, I can tell you The Abbaye always serves up scrumptious.

Also- The Abbaye is a great place to take a large group to lunch.  Keep it in mind for next time.

Tonight- I took it e a s y- as I have events all weekend again.  I'll be at the Atlantic City Beer Fest all Sat and Sunday so I'll be missing the Real Ale Fest at YARDS. Perhaps I will see some of you in AC.

Lance was c r a v i n g General Tsos. He usually reserves Chinese for lazy Saturday afternoons...so I thought it odd, but I was happy to help him find some in my hood.

We went to Asia@ Cafe.
Totally bizzaro. I gave it 60 seconds. I thought we were going to leave but we stayed- he was "wicked starving," so he said. (Lance lived in Boston for 6 years).
The tables looked like a vfw hall, the back one was used for an office of sorts.  I think Rocky was on the tv.  There was one other table.  Its the closest restaurant to my house other than Bibou (and it wasn't a bibou night) that I have never been to in 8 months.  Now I kind of know why.  Maybe well do it again as a takeout, but never a dine-in.

I made up my own dish.  They had a coconut milk chicken on the menu. I asked to switch the chix to shrimp.  They were very obliging.  It was pretty good, but it had those weird salad bar mini cobs of corn in there.  Can't stand those things (my pops loves them).

Came home and sipped on some green tea.  We popped in New York, I love you.
and we did not love it.

Campbells Place in Chestnut Hill-= Getting Crafty with Firkin Friday- this Friday

This Friday-

Think Happy hour- around 5:15- we will be tapping a firkin of O'Reillys Stout at Campbells Place in Chestnut Hill.
They are starting to host Firkin Fridays.
Well be tapping a firkin of O'Reilly's Stout
Sly Fox Cans and one other Sly Fox.

Irish Session Music All night!

Growing up Woods on St. Patrick's Day

Growing up Woods with 4 siblings was non-stop nuts. Holidays were always a big deal, laden with tradition. I think we're 75% Irish (like you couldn't tell). On St. Patricks Day, Mother Woods  (she likes being called mother- I always thought it too formal) took it to an extreme by making sure our brown bag was filled with all things green. (I guess this was more of a "Pryor" thing- my mother's maiden name)

A typical St. Patrick's Lunch would have Ecto Cooler (it's green) Grapes, Key Lime Yogurt and some gross sandwich with ice berg lettuce.(growing up her mother would give her mint jelly sandwiches- even grosser). The best part was the non-green item- the Irish Potato Candy.  Being the coconut lover that I am- they are one of my favorite treats.  I recently found out from Green Aisle Grocer, Adam Erace, that they are uniquely Philadelphian.  Seek them out today....and an O'Reilly's stout of course.

Slainte!

Happy Saint Patricks Day-= a few places to catch a pint of O'Reillys Stout

Sly Fox's Brian O'Reilly spent 8 years tweaking his recipe for the Irish Dry stout.
Today O'Reilly's Stout is served all over Philly, the surrounding counties, New Jersey and New York.

Feats of Strengths and Weaknesses recapped with photos

Seeing Dan Conwway of Left Hand last night reminded me that I've yet to get my pics up from the "Feats of strengths and weaknesses" night. (Some mine, many Stephen Lyfords).

DFC did an outstanding job...but Lee Marren- ever the aggressor- of Stone Brewing wanted it a little bit more. He had his new lady friend there that night and wanted to make sure she knew what a catch he was.

When Lee took the crown, he accepted his victory by announcing that "I can spell bitches." Apparently his ability to spell words like brettanomyces gave him the competitive edge. I had a great time without a drinking. Lots of industry folks were out to support. I realized I don't suck at miniature golf when I focus, Nick Johnson was up to usual shenanigans, Casey Hughes came in last place, but I blame it on his Chinese food coma lingering from the afternoon.  Angie from Lancaster did a great job- also talented at miniature golf.  The emcee, Chris, told about 500 jokes and about 400 of them were funny, Scoats was a great host, and yes, fun was had by all us. (especially Nick Johnson).

Still Holding the Pork: My Week in Eats

So I give my self and A for effort.  I finally ate meat yesterday at the Brewer's Plate (although now I am back on the veggie wagon already- remember Dad said I can cheat on Sundays and you always have to listen to your Pops.)  After the Feats of Strengths and Weaknesses event at Grey Lodge- I came home and looked up all the pairings.
Pork- everywhere!

Out of 21 restaurants (that had the potential to bring a savory dish) 8 had Pig (38%).  This is a mere 5 days after PW's " Snout to Tail" Issue, and one week after acclaimed chef Jim Burke of JAMES had an "Exploring the pig" dinner.

So apparently The Pig is hip.  Here are some of the offerings at the Brewers Plate. Unfortunately I barely made it into the Rotunda. I barely made it around. Never saw the chocolates. Nothing. When I got a break- I ran into people I hadn't seen in a while, and talked too much. The good news is Sly Fox was paired with one of the best bites in the museum.  Royal Tavern did a take on their Chicken Franky- a popular Indian Wrap served on the streets of Mumbai.

Curry Chicken, Indian Coleslaw and Chili Mayo on Lovash Chips.
If I didn't get to eat anything else all day- I would've been just fine.  The curry was that good.

Back to Pig:

South Wark had Pig Head Porcetta with Radish Salad & House-made BBQ Potato Chips
London Grill's Pastrami Cured Pork Belly Sandwiches on Stoudts Bakery Bread (i later got to try the dark wheat bread- awesome)
Tamarind-jaggery Glazed Pork Shoulder from BINDI
Vietnamese Shrimp Cocktail with House-made Pork Jerky From SPTR
Pork Spare Rib with a Victory Storm King Stout Sauce from
BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich with Whiskey BBQ Sauce & Cole Slaw from Village Whiskey
Smoked Meats from El Camino
House Made Garlic Sausage & Pink Lady Apple Pinchos from Bar Ferdinand

I'm back to no Pork.

So today was sushi.  The Ommegang Queen and I went to kisso
We got there rather late- but they were  accomodating.
We had some green tea- oozing antioxidants.  We got a few of the specials including a tuna roll that in addition to having spicy tuna on the interior, they  had a seared tuna on top. That was my favorite. A lot of the other spicy stuff we ordered packed a bit too much heat.

Saturday was Hummus at Johnny Brendas.
I stopped eating Hummus in 2005.  I used to work at a restaurant that my favorite thing on the menu was their Greek plate- so I ordered it almost everyday. How do you mess up hummus, feta, grape leaves and tomatoes. You don't.

So I ate so much hummus that year-that until recently I couldn't look at the mashed chickpeas any more.
Then Zahav enters the picture.  I bought some at the Green Aisle Grocery on Passyunk last week- thinking it would be a treat for the raging panda of a roommate.  I ended up loving it soo much I ate a lot of it (with help from little Woods).  I didn't think I would have it again so soon, but Saturday's Johnny Brendas was so packed, Lance and I couldn't find a table and  Origlio's craft sales pro, Jim Wiggins was there with Jim Wiggins sr (aka Big Jim) and his friend Bob inviting us to join them at their table. Jim gets hummus all the time, thus- how I came to try it for the 2nd time in 2 weeks.
I also ordered the French Toast.  I usually leave the sweet stuff to Lance at brunch- but the meat-heavy menu featuring an Irish Breakfast was not on my lenten lineup. It had a yummy whiskey apple compote.
I only made it halfway through but it was good.

Tuesday was SideCar's Flatbread. It was a beautiful day out.  Pals Johnny Goodtimes  and Art Etchells joined me for a late lunch as I got the latest scoop on Adam Ritter (sidecar head homeboy) new spot, Kraftwork to open up at Girard and Montgomery this spring.  The flatbread hit the proverbial spot with fresh mozz and basil. Pikeland Pilsner was on tap providing a delightful pairing.

Later that night I had what would be my first of seven events in five days at Ressurection.  I always have to eat when I go there....so it was scallops and shrimp.  The scallops were mutant and delicious served with a little fennel on the side.

Sidenote: Brendan Hartranft gets credit for the most innovative firkin stand I've witnessed in a bit.  A simple cinder block would provide the base stand for the firkin of Gang Aft Agley to rest on.

I made Zucchini Parmesan one night for dinner.
Way to take something remotely healthy for you and turn in into a bowl of grease.
Wednesday night was my Abbaye promo- Lentil Wrap.  Quite Good. Grateful for the salad on the side because Lord knows I don't need fries.
Thursday night was my Good Dog promo.  I snacked on some delicious mussels.  When you think
Good Dog you always think Burger- but I encourage you to try something else next time you're there.

Friday- Lance brought me home Tuna from Iron Hill. It was paired with a warm lentil salad. I enjoyed.
Saturday was mahi mahi tacos at Grey Lodge. Scoats was kind enough to buy all the local reps dinner that participated in the FEATS competition. It was good sustenance to energize me for battle.

I still have to make it to a bunch of Vegetarian spots before I take up the pig again. Of course I know about Horizons and Mi Lah. I hope to make it to newcomer Thoreau on Spring Garden for their
Blue plate: Rosette of purple Okinawa sweet potatoes atop sweet corn gravy, grilled avocado with edamame succotash, brochette of Szechwan carrot syrup, glazed shiitakes or their Tamarind Peanut Noodles: Soba noodles in sweet-lightly spicy tamarind glaze, fingerling potatoes, roasted shallots, green and white asparagus, many herbs. Topped with crunchy watercress-purple beet salad and chopped peanuts.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks for reading.

Hold the Pork Day 17

I stayed in on Saturday night to be Chef Boy R Suz.
I somehow found the inspiration to make Gnocchi.
I am no Italian Grandmother- and it wasn't perfect- but it was a darn good effort.
The dough wasn't cold enough to make the fork ridges in it- but the taste was there.

I boiled it for about 2 minutes- then pan seared it in butter to get the perfect crispness.
The sauce was perhaps my best attempt yet.
I held the onions thinking that Lance would come over- but he did not.
I sauteed up some garlic- added mushrooms, chopped tomatoes (with basil from a can) just a lil tomato paste, oregano, thyme, seared zucchini, a lil red wine, red pepper, and black pepper.  I let it cook for about an hour and a half while I was working on the gnocchi. The red wine flavor was awesome.

Then i made Oatmeal raisin cookies.  They're pretty chewy- just a tad dry-you'll need Milk- and you need milk anyway.

March 7, 2010

Maybe we'll listen to some Gang of Four as well.

Brendan-
I turn to you and you're trusty juke of an IPOD.

Iron Hill Dinner with Paul Rutherford @ the Swift Half next Saturday

It's Philly Beer Weekend- and there are apparently 50+ events going on.

I know I am going to be on a bus at some point, drinking stouts at Johnny Brendas, wood-aged and smoked beers at Standard Tap, barleywines at the Institute and somehow ending up at Grey Lodge to compete in a feats of strength contest amongst my contemporaries.  I hope I don't have to arm wrestle.

So its too bad that I can't escort Lance Romance to Paul Rutherford's Iron Hill Dinner at Swift Half.

Chef Jessica O'Donnell's menu looks awesome. A bit more creative then others I have attended this year. Porter Pumpernickel Bread Pudding with roasted chilies and vanilla braised figs?

Paul's brewery is 62.6 miles away from Swift Half (at the Piazza). Chances are you've never made it to Lancaster to try his delicious liquid works of art.  Here lies  your opportunity- as golden as Paul's hair. Don't blow it.

You can make ressies by calling 215-923-4600.
7 pm.

  • Pan-Seared Shrimp Cakes with goat cheese and papaya emulsification, paired with Biere de Mars, a French farmhouse-style ale brewed with wheat, aromatic malts and a touch of orange peel
  • Vindaloo Pizza with grilled chicken and pickled jalapenos, paired with Rye IPA, an American IPA brewed with a generous amount of hops and rye malt for dry spiciness
  • Lamb Loin with lamb jus, quinoa salad, yogurt, dried cranberries, apples, celery and smoked almonds, paired with Braveheart, a strong Scotch ale brewed with Belgian yeast for a distinct, fruity character
  • Porter-Pumpernickel Bread Pudding with roasted chiles, vanilla braised figs and chocolate drizzle, paired with Oompa Loompa Chocolate Stout, an English stout brewed with Belgian bittersweet chocolate, milk sugar and Madagascar vanilla beans
